Lauf Carbonara Fat Bike Suspension Fork

  • The design of the Lauf Carbonara is based around eliminating all
  • Light versions are for riders under 154lbs, regular versions are for riders over 143lbs
  • All Lauf forks are warranted for 5 years to the original owner
  • The springs on the Lauf Carbonara are made of military spec S2 glassfiber that is extremely tough on hits and flexible in the direction of the travel
  • Certain Calipers need an adaptor fit the fork; Magura MT7/MT5, Hope E4: adaptor and 200mm disc. Avid BB5/BB7 spacers/adaptor and 183mm or larger disc

Lauf’s forks have garnered quite the buzz with their leafspring design and unique aesthetic, and there may be no place that maintenance-free bump absorption is better suited than on a fat bike. Inherently quirky, the Lauf’s design seems right at home on a burly frame matched with beefy tires and utilitarian frame baggage, just waiting to head off into the unknown. With 60mm of travel provided by S2 glassfiber springs slotted into a carbon body, the Carbonara falls somewhere in between the plushly damped, heavier ride of a traditional fat suspension fork and a feathery yet uncushioned rigid option. Lauf claims that the travel is progressive, meaning it gets stiffer as it compresses to prevent bottom outs while still smoothing out the smaller bumps along the way. The leafspring design does pride simplicity and freedom from maintenance over adjustability, which means the overall feel of the travel will vary across riders and is highly dependent on rider weight. To make up for the lack of adjustability or tuning options, Lauf offers the Carbonara in two different spring rates. This particular fork comes with the “regular” spring rate, accompanied by a rider weight recommendation of 176 pounds and up. That isn’t to say that lighter riders can’t ride it, but just that those under the weight recommendation will experience a stiffer ride than originally intended with this fork.

SQlab 612 Ergowave Active Carbon Bicycle Saddle

  • Area of use Road & MTB Race
  • Length (mm) 275
  • Material Rails Carbon fibre (oval shape 7 x 9.6 mm)
  • Material Cover C84 Kevlar
  • max. Weight (kg) 90

The weight optimised 612 Ergowave active Carbon was specifically designed to accomodate the requirements of both competetive and leisure cyclists both on the road or mountainbike. With 220g it is the lightest Ergowave model with active technology. The wave-like shape and raised rear section provides perfect rearward support and an optimal pressure distribution which reaches deep into the body structures resulting in improved power transmission. The lowered nose in combination with the dip provides optimal pressure relief for the perineal area. The flat but slim SQlab MaxContact saddle nose and the firm padding of the 612 were both specifically designed for the needs on the roadbike. The SQlab active technology allows the saddle to follow the biomechanical motion when pedalling resulting in increased comfort, mobilisation of the spinal discs and reduced pressure to the sitbones.

Though Selle SMP has been making saddles in Italy since just after WWII, the brand inexplicably christened the Avant Saddle with a French word. The choice is doubly confusing given that “avant” translates to “before” when the saddle’s recommended use situates it closer to the “behind” side of things. Semantic nitpicking disappears once you’re actually atop the Avant, though, as it presents a wide, generously padded (by Selle SMP’s standards) face to your derriere. Maybe the saddle’s confusing title is meant to stress that it puts comfort ahead of any other criteria. The Avant is built with wide sit bones in mind, and Selle SMP recommends it for men whose waists range from 34 to 39in and women in the 32 to 37in range. Strategic cutouts and a the iconic, drooping nose help ensure that the soft tissues between sit bones don’t suffer. This is especially apparent when sitting forward on the saddle to drive a high pace on the flats. The embroidered branding on the full-leather (black) or blemish-free synthetic (colored) cover adds a touch of Italian elegance–though, to be fair, we’ve just come to expect this from Selle SMP.
